Gaoshan Ethnic MinorityThe Gaoshan ethnic minority has a population of about 400,000, most of which live in mountain areas and the east coast of Taiwan Island, and on the Isle of Lanyu. They have their own language which belongs to the Indonesian group of the 3 dialects – Taiyer, Zou and Paiwan, totaling 20 kinds, of which 13 kinds are still used by Gaoshans. They do not have their own script. They believe in the primitive religions and practice worship of the heaven, nature and the spirits. Gaoshan is a general name of several ethnic minority on Taiwan Island, such as Yamei, Taiya, Saixiaand so on. The languages, customs and clothes style vary from region to region. Although Gaoshans account only about 2% of the population of Taiwan Island, they are the earliest inhabitant on the island. They mainly deal with agriculture, forestry and hunting. The Yamei people live on fishery mainly. |
